What a week-at-a-glance page is for
A week planner sets the seven days as columns and the hours as rows, giving one box for each hour of each day. The form answers a different question from a to-do list: instead of what must happen, it answers when it happens, and the grid makes gaps visible at a glance.
Three numbers decide whether the sheet is comfortable to write on. The row count sets how many hours appear; the first-hour setting decides where the day begins, which matters for people whose working day does not start at midnight; and the margin keeps the outer frame away from the printer’s non-printable border. Because the drawing is a vector in millimetres, the boxes are the same size on paper as on screen when printed at 100 percent.
A printed week page earns its place beside a phone calendar because it is always open and writable. Crossing out and rewriting by hand, taping a strip of washi tape to mark a recurring block, and pinning the week above a desk are all things a screen does not do as well.
Hour rows versus blank boxes
An hour-row grid imposes a time axis whether the user writes much or not, so an appointment always has an obvious home. That structure helps people who book meetings, teach classes, or run shifts where the clock, not the task, drives the day. The cost is wasted space on a quiet day.
A blank-box planner — a page of empty squares with no time labels — suits a day of mixed, untimed tasks and adapts to any rhythm. It is the wrong tool when most of a day is one long block, because the time still has to be written by hand and the boxes give no cue. The choice is between structure the page provides and structure the writer supplies.

How many rows actually fit
On A4 with a 6 mm margin the usable height is about 285 mm. The weekday header takes roughly 6 mm and a left gutter of 9 mm holds the hour labels. After that, the rows share what remains, so the row height is the leftover height divided by the row count.

On US Letter the sheet is 279.4 mm tall, a little shorter than A4’s 297 mm, so the same row count leaves slightly less height per row. The width difference is small — Letter is about 6 mm wider — so the seven day columns are nearly the same size on either paper.
Day-start conventions
The first-hour setting labels the left gutter and every row below counts one hour later. A value of 07:00 gives 07:00, 08:00 and so on; a value of 06:00 suits early starts and still reaches the evening if the row count is high enough. Setting it to 00:00 produces a full twenty-four hour clock, though most printed planners trim the sleeping hours to save paper.
The week-start setting decides whether Monday or Sunday sits in the first column, exactly as on the calendar page. The day labels are recomputed, not just relabelled, so a Monday-start grid places the weekend at the right edge where most European habits expect it.
What people get wrong
The common failure is a planner too small to write in: a row count pushed to the maximum on a short sheet leaves cells a few millimetres tall, and handwriting spills across lines. Another is forgetting the margin, which lets the frame fall inside the printer’s crop zone and come back with a white strip. A third is printing at fit to page, which shrinks every box a few percent and quietly breaks the time scale.
None of these are faults in the drawing; they are choices made at the settings or in the print dialog. The preview shows the real millimetre geometry, so the row height seen on screen is the row height that reaches the paper.
Checking column width on the printed page
A week grid can appear exact on screen yet print a few percent narrow, because both the browser and the driver sit between the drawing and the sheet. The dependable check is a ruler on one real print.
- Send one sheet to the printer at scale 100 % (some dialogs call this Actual size) with the same paper size as the selector.
- Place a ruler across the top of the grid, from the left edge of the Monday column to the right edge of the Sunday column, and confirm the seven columns are equal and the total matches the preview width.
- If the columns are narrower than the preview, look for Fit, Shrink to printable area or Scale to fit in the print dialog and turn it off.
- If the columns are right but the grid is cropped at one margin, raise the margin value by the shortfall and print again.
The drawing never alters to correct a scaling fault, since the millimetre layout was already accurate; what had slipped was a setting in the print pipeline rescaling the sheet back toward the driver’s default.
Honest limits
- The grid is one week only; printing a month means printing four or five weeks separately.
- Hour labels are whole hours, so half-hour splits are not drawn — write them in by hand if needed.
- Very high row counts make cells too small for more than a tick or a short code.
- Public holidays are not marked, since they vary by region and year.
- The optional title shares the top margin with the header, so keep it short to avoid overlap.
