Paper sized for the work in front of you

Choose a dot grid for flexible notes, graph paper for diagrams, ruled lines for writing or a checklist for short tasks. Spacing is expressed in millimetres and can be set from 3 to 20. Unlike a screenshot stretched across a page, the generated drawing uses physical dimensions for both the sheet and its marks.

A 5 mm grid means consecutive grid lines are five millimetres apart in the generated document. It will only measure five millimetres on paper if the print workflow preserves scale. Browser fit-to-page options, office software margins and printer drivers can each shrink a correctly generated file.

Keeping the families on one engine is deliberate. A dot grid, a graph sheet and ruled paper differ only in which mark is repeated, so spacing and margin behaviour are identical across them, and one measurement check verifies all four.

Check a sample before printing a batch

Select A4 or US Letter to match your paper. Open the print dialog, choose the same size, set scaling to 100 percent and turn off the browser’s page headers and footers. Print one page first.

For a 5 mm grid, the distance across ten spaces should be 50 mm. Measure between the line centres, not from the edge of a thick mark, and expect a fraction of a millimetre of variation from the printer itself. If the result is smaller, look for a setting called Fit, Shrink to printable area or Scale to fit. If the outer edge is clipped, increase the available printer margin through the driver or choose a printer capable of the requested area.

Choose a useful line style

Light grey uses less visual contrast and leaves handwriting prominent. Blue separates the printed structure from black pen marks. Dark grey is easier to see when the page will be photocopied or scanned. Actual ink consumption and printed colour vary with the printer; this tool does not estimate cartridge cost.

An optional title leaves room at the top of the sheet. Leave it empty for a more flexible blank page. Checklist boxes are small squares beside each line; for comfortable writing, use a larger spacing such as 7 or 8 mm rather than the smallest setting.

What printed stock does well, and what it cannot do

Printing your own stock beats buying a pad in three specific ways: the spacing is exactly what the task needs rather than whatever a stationery shop stocks, the paper is whatever is already in the tray rather than whatever the pad was bound with, and a run of twenty sheets costs the paper and nothing else.

The limits are just as real. A home printer cannot make a gummed edge, so a printed pad does not tear off cleanly — a bulldog clip or a folder does the same job for less. Thin copier paper buckles under a fountain pen where a bought pad is usually heavier. And a printed template is only as square as the printer feeds it: a sheet that skews by half a degree is visible across a full-page grid, and no software setting corrects a mechanical feed problem.

Ink is the last variable, and it is worth one line because the four families differ by an order of magnitude. A ruled sheet at 8 mm uses roughly thirty lines; the same area of 4 mm graph paper uses about four hundred, and a dot grid at 4 mm places several thousand marks on the same page. A light grey keeps even the densest grid cheap to print, which is why it is the default — and why a page that will be photocopied should move to the dark option rather than to a denser spacing.
