What the dot grid page draws

A regular lattice of small dots covering the printable area, with no lines joining them. The drawing is a vector built in millimetres, so the spacing is exact and the sheet stays sharp at any print size. Each dot marks a point on a grid that the eye can use without the grid being drawn.

Two settings decide the feel. The dot spacing sets the gap between marks, which is the same control a grid would use for its line spacing. The colour sets how faint the dots are, which changes both ink use and how much the marks recede under writing. Because the marks are points rather than lines, the sheet reads as open space with quiet guidance, not as a cage of rules.

The page earns its place between blank and ruled paper: blank paper offers no structure, ruled paper offers too much for free drawing, and the dot grid offers just enough to keep things straight.

The compromise between blank and ruled

A blank sheet gives total freedom and no help; a ruled sheet gives help and imposes a direction on every line. The dot grid sits between them. The dots mark positions, so writing stays level and boxes stay square, but they do not insist on a baseline the way a rule does.

For mixed work — a paragraph next to a small sketch next to a list — the dot grid supports all three without any one form dominating. A ruled page fights the sketch; a blank page leaves the paragraph drifting. The dots are there when needed and invisible when not.

Spacing choices

The gap between dots is the main control. At 4 mm the field is dense enough to stand in for light graph paper; at 5 mm it feels like a gentle square grid with the lines removed; at 6 mm there is clear room for handwriting between the marks. Closer than 4 mm the dots merge into a speckle; wider than 6 mm they stop guiding the hand.

The page offers 2 to 12 mm so the same tool serves a fine technical sketch and a broad layout diagram. Most everyday use lands in the 4 to 6 mm band, where the dots guide without crowding.

Why dots beat a grid for mixed work

A full grid draws a line through every position, which can clash with pencil shading or with a photograph stuck to the page. Dots sit under the work and let the ink or the image be the loud element. When the grid is wanted, the writer simply connects the dots by hand and erases nothing, because nothing was drawn to erase.

The marks also survive reuse well. A page filled one week can be flipped and used again, since the faint dots do not read as a previous layout the way old rules might. For a notebook that holds changing content, that neutrality is useful.

Ink use and bullet-journal work

The dots are tiny circles, so even a full page uses little toner compared with a solid grid. Light grey is the thriftiest and suits originals kept in a binder; dark grey or teal cost a little more but copy cleanly, which matters when the sheet is duplicated for a class or a team.

Bullet journals rely on the dot grid because the same page can hold a calendar, a list, a tracker and a sketch, each aligned to the dots without ruled lines getting in the way. Design work uses the same property: a quick mock-up stays tidy because the marks keep boxes and baselines honest while the drawing stays the focus.

Checking the dot pitch against a ruler

A printout can look correct and still come back a few percent small, because the browser and the print driver both sit between the drawing and the physical sheet. The only dependable check is a ruler laid on a real print.

  1. Send one sheet to the printer at scale 100 % (some dialogs label this Actual size) and the same paper size as the selector.
  2. Lay a ruler along a horizontal run of dots and measure the distance across, say, ten of them. At a 5 mm setting that span should read 50 mm; at 4 mm it should read 40 mm.
  3. If the measured span is short by a few percent, open the print dialog and switch off Fit, Shrink to printable area or Scale to fit.
  4. If the pitch is right but the sheet is cropped on one side, raise the margin value by the missing amount and print once more.

The drawing itself never changes to correct a scaling fault, because the geometry was already exact; what drifted was a setting in the print pipeline that had been silently rescaling the output back toward the driver’s default.

Honest limits

  • The dots are a single size; large or hollow markers are not drawn.
  • Spacing outside 2 to 12 mm is not offered, as the field stops being useful.
  • The page draws dots only; it adds no frame, header or page number.
  • A solid grid must be drawn by hand if the work needs connecting lines.
  • Very faint dots on thin paper can disappear on the back; pick a darker colour for see-through stock.
